Report: 3 Big Names Are Potential Trade Candidates For Nashville Predators
It was a tough collapse Wednesday night in Toronto for the Nashville Predators. After skating out to a 3-0 lead, the Preds lost their footing, and the Maple Leafs soared back for a 5-4 overtime victory. Nashville has just seven goals total in their three games (and four of them came in last night's loss). Should the team start to question their direction as the season moves along, it's quite possible that new president of hockey operations and general manager Chris MacFarland could pull some big moves. He wasn't shy about changing things up during his first offseason on the job, and he likely wouldn't hesitate to consider more trades—even with some of his more notable charges. Insider Pierre LeBrun, speaking on RDS , named three players he could see on the move, or at least an attempt to do so by MacFarland. Chris MacFarland was honest with (his players) during their meetings before the season. (His) message was very simple. If the team doesn't get off to a good start this season, he certainly has no choice but to start looking at how he might have to make a deal. The reality is that Ryan O'Reilly is the only one among the top veterans whose contract expires at the end of the season. So he'll be the one drawing the most interest from other teams before (the trade deadline) March 1st. If things aren't going well, he might have conversations with (Steven) Stamkos, who has one year left on his contract after this season, and with the captain (Roman) Josi, who also has one year left (after this year). Those are some big names. Of course, O'Reilly was a much-wanted man on the trade market last season as well, but even without any trade protection in his contract, the old Predators regime treated him as if he had a "verbal" no-trade clause. That's not the case anymore under MacFarland. O'Reilly, Stamkos Josi could be asked to move on if Predators struggle Stamkos, who does have a real, honest-to-goodness no-move clause in his contract, also doesn't seem to be interested in leaving Nashville. He and his family are quite happy there. The 19-year veteran had an under-the-radar 42-goal season last year (if that's even possible for a player of his stature), and already has three goals in three games this season. Josi, the captain, has been with the team for his entire 16-year career. He, too, is off to a fine start, with three points in three games while logging 25:21 of ice time per game. He also holds a no-move clause, and it doesn't feel like he'd be keen on moving. In the end, LeBrun notes that MacFarland isn't interested in the Predators just treading water trying to make the playoffs. "His vision is a team that is possibly among the top 6 teams in the league that tries to win the Cup every year, like the team he built in Colorado." And if that means trying to move on from some future Hall of Famers, so be it.
Leafs' Auston Matthews Happy For Mitch Marner's Success In Vegas
Auston Matthews and Mitch Marner spent almost a decade playing together with the Toronto Maple Leafs, and even though Marner turned his back on the franchise, Matthews was still very happy to see Marner's success in the Stanley Cup Playoffs with the Vegas Golden Knights. Marner and Matthews are set to faceoff for the first time this season, and Matthews was asked about Marner leading the league in postseason points last season. It's obvious the two remain very close off the ice, and have still kept in touch: “Personally as a friend, I was happy for him. We still keep in touch a lot. He’s a great person, great teammate, great friend... so it’ll be nice to see him tonight.” Auston Matthews on Mitch Marner's Stanley Cup Final run with Vegas. https://t.co/mWjRIrmJhk TSN (@TSN_Sports) October 8, 2026 Marner looks to keep the momentum going into this season, meanwhile, Matthews has some new linemates in Jack Roslovic and Kirill Marchenko, and has seemingly turned back the clock and is back to dominating hockey games. Matthews posted four points, including the overtime winner in a thrilling comeback on Tuesday against the Nashville Predators. Leafs' head coach Jim Hiller is uber-impressed from what he's seeing from his captain early on this season. "Yeah, it really was for me," Hiller said. "I thought he's been really good all the whole camp. He's working on every puck. But tonight, for me, just a little bit different tonight. And from just a pure hockey perspective, to appreciate his game tonight was really a special night for him. I know he scored the overtime winner. I'm not talking about that. Just his game start to finish." "What I really felt was, you know, there's lots of players that played really well, but I really felt something special from Auston tonight," he said. "If you go back and watch that game, just go shift by shift on his game, you'll see all the great things that have been said about him." Matthews has posted two goals and five points in his first five games this season, and looks to be back to the 50-goal scorer we're all used to seeing in blue and white.

NHL Trade Rumors: Maple Leafs reject multiple trade offers
The Toronto Maple Leafs continue to be a team to watch on the NHL's trade market. General manager John Chayka has been busy since he took over revamping the roster, and there's certainly more moves to come for the Leafs. However, don't expect to see Easton Cowan traded, as the former first-round pick has moved up the lineup, taking over for Gavin McKenna on Toronto's second line, and despite tons of trade interest, the team won't be moving Cowan anytime soon. Elliotte Friedman: Re Easton Cowan/Maple Leafs: I hesitate to say that guys are off the market because I think we're learned that nothing is ever guaranteed, but they're not looking to do anything here, they're very happy with him - NHL Now (10/2) Cowan is off to a hot start under head coach Jim Hiller, who really loves the way the forward works his tail off, and is a puck hound for his linemates. Cowan's worked on his game a ton this past offseason, and is building off of his AHL Calder Cup with the Toronto Marlies. Cowan, 21, has this season and next left on his entry-level contract, making $900,000 average annual value. This season in four games, the London Knights product has posted one goal and two assists, for three points, seeing an average of 14:22 of ice-time per game. The Maple Leafs moved Matthew Knies, and when they did so, multiple teams reached out about Cowan's availability. For now, he stays, and all signs are pointing to Cowan being a major part of this team's core moving forward.
