The Toronto Maple Leafs have had quite the offseason, as general manager John Chayka has been cooking since day one on the job. The Leafs have also had some serious luck go their way, with winning the Gavin McKenna sweepstakes, and now heading into Chayka's first season at the helm, the expectations have climbed significantly. Chayka loves to wheel and deal, perhaps more than any other GM in the league, and he's already pulled off some significant trades, moving Joseph Woll, Simon Benoit, Brandon Carlo, and Dennis Hildeby. The Leafs are in a much better place roster wise heading into next season, but that doesn't mean there aren't more deals on the way. Chayka continues to talk to other teams, and according to sources close to the Maple Leafs, has been open to including Morgan Rielly, Dakota Joshua, or Steven Lorentz in trade talks. All three players had down seasons last season, and while Rielly is the longest-tenured Leaf, Joshua only has one season under his belt, while Lorentz has a few. Rielly owns a no-movement clause, but has submitted a western conference-heavy list of teams he'd approve a trade to. He was linked to the Anaheim Ducks and San Jose Sharks earlier in the offseason, but the Sharks have changed directions, while the Ducks seem like the only hope for a trade at this point. Rielly prefers to stay in Toronto, him and his family love it there, but knows if the Leafs flat out don't want him anymore, he has to move on for what's best for both sides. Joshua is signed for two more years, and the same goes for Lorentz. Joshua owns a 12-team no-trade clause and is set to earn $3.2 million, while Lorentz doesn't have any trade protection and is owed $1.3 million AAV. Between these two forwards, Lorentz has more trade value on the open market based on his salary, while the Leafs prefer to trade Joshua if they can, to help free up some cap space, as they're currently over the cap.

UFA Patrik Laine Linked To 5 Teams
Patrik Laine remains one of the top options on the UFA market for teams looking for an offensive boost for their lineups. The seven-time 20-goal scorer and former 2nd overall pick in the NHL Draft will have to take a massive pay cut, as he's coming off his $8.7 million AAV contract. The Montreal Canadiens don't seem the least bit interested in bringing him back, after Laine played just five games for them last year, due to injury, and then their reluctance to add him back to the roster for the last few months of the season after he was supposedly healthy. But Laine is still just 28, and popped 20 goals for the Habs in just 52 games the year before. He can likely be had for a minimum salary (or, potentially, even a PTO, according to some reports) . The latest update, from Herb Zurkowsky of the Montreal Gazette , has linked five teams to having interest in Laine. New York Rangers Minnesota Wild Tampa Bay Lightning Toronto Maple Leafs Philadelphia Flyers For the Rangers, the team finished 23rd in the NHL in goals scored last season. Adding Pavel Dorofeyev this offseason in a big sign-and-trade with the Vegas Golden Knights will help to address that, but Laine could also be a low-risk, high-upside potential target. GM Chris Drury is still looking to add a forward. The Wild don't appear ready to re-up with their own UFA, Vladimir Tarasenko, who provided 23 goals last season, so perhaps they'd consider Laine a potential replacement for that production at a much cheaper price. They did pursue him earlier this summer. Zurkowsky suggests that Laine could line up with Auston Matthews in Toronto, but adding a playmaker to Matthews' wing would make more sense. As for Philly, he writes, " While the Flyers’ power play could use improvement, it seems unlikely any marriage between Laine and demanding head coach Rick Tocchet would be blissful." Wherever he winds up, there likely wouldn't be a big role for Laine, perhaps only as a power play specialist, as his defensive acumen is always in question. In addition, injuries have derailed him for large swaths of each of the last six seasons, ever since he left Winnipeg. For these reasons, he will likely be forced to take a minimum salary "prove it" type deal, at best.
