2 Blue Jackets Named Prime Trade Candidates
Columbus Blue Jackets general manager Don Waddell is apparently not finished wheeling and dealing. The Blue Jackets exec pulled off a season-eve blockbuster with the Toronto Maple Leafs, acquiring Matthew Knies, Steven Lorentz and Emil Andrae, and cashed in on Kirill Marchenko, who wasn't going to re-sign in Columbus. Waddell also managed to move Miles Wood and Elvis Merzlikins' contracts in the process. Word is, he's far from finished and two Blue Jackets forwards could be next. David Pagnotta: Re Blue Jackets: Kent Johnston...Dmitri Voronkov...their names are swirling out there - DFO Insider (9/30) Pagnotta reports that both Kent Johnston and Dmitri Voronkov have been discussed in trade talks recently, and could be moved by Waddell in his next trade. Johnston, who turns 24 this month, is off to a good start with two points in two games, averaging just over 16 minutes of ice-time per matchup. He's a former first-round pick, who is a pending restricted free agent, earning $1.8 million against the cap, and doesn't hold any trade protection. He's certainly no stranger to trade rumors, as Johnston has been linked to several teams throughout this past summer. There's been some speculation that like Marchenko, Voronkov prefers to play elsewhere next season and isn't interested in re-signing a long-term contract extension to stay in Columbus. For now, Knies continues to shine as he's gotten off to a hot start with his new team, and he could have a couple new forwards joining him in Columbus in the coming weeks.
