Blue Jackets Asked For 1 of 3 Huge Names From Canadiens For Marchenko
The Columbus Blue Jackets came out of the Kirill Marchenko situation smelling like roses. The dynamic offensive threat clearly wanted out, but Jackets GM Don Waddell held his ground until he got a star player in return. He got that from the Toronto Maple Leafs in Matthew Knies. His four points in his first two games is a Blue Jackets franchise record. But we also know that the Montreal Canadiens were the hottest to trot for Marchenko all summer long. They've been looking for another top-six star, and Marchenko would have been an ideal fit to play with his Russian countryman Ivan Demidov. However, insider Frank Seravalli has revealed that the bold asks from Columbus in order to send Marchenko to the Habs were just too much to bear for Les Habitants. Montreal has already attempted to secure Kirill Marchenko. However, the Canadiens ultimately weren’t willing to part with Juraj Slafkovsky, Ivan Demidov or Cole Caufield, which is why Matthew Knies now plays in Columbus. Sources say the Canadiens offered a package for Marchenko believed to include two forwards and one defenseman from their current NHL roster, a first-round pick, as well as another conditional pick that could convert into a first-rounder. Obviously, those two forwards Montreal offered were not of the caliber of Slafkovsky, Demidov or Caufield. So the Habs continue their search for another top-six talent, and as we've heard, they're turned their attention to Dylan Larkin. But as Seravalli notes, "that list does not include any of Canada’s seven franchises – much to the chagrin of Montreal." If the Habs are willing to send the same kind of three-NHL players + first-rounders package to Detroit, perhaps a deal could get done. But Larkin would have to change his No Canada tune first. And Seravalli notes he'd have some American company on that strong Montreal roster, in Caufield, Lane Hutson, Chris Kreider, and Jayden Struble.
