Maple Leafs GM Shuts Down Matthew Knies Trade Rumors

Matthew Knies was almost traded by the Toronto Maple Leafs last season, but new general manager John Chayka made one thing very clear at media day yesterday, the Knies trade talks were something Brad Treliving was a part of, and Chayka has no interest in carrying on the conversation. Trade talks blew up this summer surrounding Knies, after someone leaked the fact Treliving almost traded the 23-year-old power forward to the Montreal Canadiens for a package full of prospects and draft picks. It was a move that would have stunned Leafs Nation, and a trade that would have likely pushed Auston Matthews out the door. What a difference a couple of months make after Chayka and Mats Sundin have made significant changes, and more specifically, upgrades to the Leafs' lineup. “On any type of trade speculation, I think I was pretty direct on Matthew Knies in my opening press conference,” Chayka said. “The statement still stands. In my job as GM, we will evaluate everything, but that is the job. Again, the idea that we are going to improve the roster by moving a top young player, I mean, anything is possible, but I guess it is not probable. I think it makes for good writing and interest for people, but as we think about our team and how we can improve, that is a tough bar to hurdle.” Knies is coming off a career season in assists, and points, and is expected to start this season on the Leafs' top line with Matthews and Jack Roslovic. The Leafs are expected to have a huge bounce back season, and Knies is going to play a major part in it, as he'll average close to 20 minutes a night, and will see time on both the power play and penalty kill. John Chayka comments on trade rumours surrounding Matthew Knies and mentions work in the previous management group. pic.twitter.com/mfrdWQ9330 TSN (@TSN_Sports) September 16, 2026 The former second-round pick is signed through the 2031 season at $7.7 million AAV, and good news Leafs Nation, won't be traded to the rival Canadiens anytime soon. Knies also commented on the trade rumors, and admitted, he certainly heard them for the first time in Toronto. “I try not to look into it too much,” Knies said. “Obviously, I’m not blind to it, I see it every now and then with my buddies sending it to me and stuff, but yeah, I guess all of that stuff, it’s cliche to say but it’s really out of my control. I didn’t have any say as to what was going on, so I’m fortunate that I’m still here and that I’m apart of this group because I love these guys. I’m just happy that I’m still wearing the blue in white and have the chance to play here for the Leafs in the next season.”

Maple Leafs Reveal How Close They Really Came To Trading Morgan Rielly

For most of the summer, it felt like a question of when, not if, Morgan Rielly would be traded out of Toronto. According to the man who would have made that call, it was never really close at all. Chayka Says It Was Never Close Maple Leafs general manager John Chayka told The Athletic's Jonas Siegel and Chris Johnston that Toronto never had anything resembling a serious offer for its longest-tenured player. "At no point did we ever have what I would characterize as a serious trade opportunity with Morgan Rielly," Chayka said. That's surprising given how loud the speculation got. TSN's Darren Dreger reported back in June that Rielly's agent, J.P. Barry, had submitted a list of four Western Conference teams his client would be willing to waive his no-movement clause for, and Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman later reported interest from the San Jose Sharks, who ultimately chose to acquire Darnell Nurse from Edmonton instead. Whatever offers did materialize around the league apparently never came close to matching what Toronto felt Rielly was worth, and rather than attach a sweetener just to move his $7.5 million cap hit, Chayka held firm. Rielly Stays, And The Fit Might Be Better Now Chayka was clear that the lack of a trade wasn't about devaluing Rielly internally. "It's the opposite," he said. "I've had very frank, candid conversations with Morgan now over the summer. What an incredible person, and he's played an important role for this team, and we expect he'll continue to do that." Rielly, 32, is coming off arguably the roughest stretch of his career, posting just 36 points and a minus-18 rating in 78 games last season under former head coach Craig Berube, numbers well below the level he played at during his prime. Morgan Rielly being dealt this offseason by the Maple Leafs was almost seen as “guarantee,” per @DarrenDreger “One of the things that I thought was a guarantee was that Morgan Rielly was going to be in a different uniform when I came back in the fall. So, I’m surprised that… pic.twitter.com/R1eYKyl0Io — Leafslatest (@Leafslatest) September 14, 2026 New head coach Jim Hiller previously served as a Leafs assistant during Rielly's best offensive season in Toronto, and Chayka pointed to that history as a reason for optimism. "As we think about this season and what we're trying to accomplish, certainly getting the puck in the forwards' hands in positions that they can then go create offense more often is a really big part of what we're trying to accomplish," Chayka said. "If you look at Morgan's career, he's been able to skate, move the puck and create offense." Rielly signed his eight-year, $60 million extension back in 2021 and still has four seasons remaining on that deal at a $7.5 million cap hit. With Darren Raddysh now in the fold to help quarterback the power play, there's a real chance Rielly slides into a second-pairing role alongside Chris Tanev this season, a lighter workload than what wore him down under Berube.
