Ex-Oilers Stanley Cup Champion Mark Messier 'Horrified' With Mike Babcock Hiring
Once considered top-tier Stanley Cup contenders, the Edmonton Oilers experienced turnover in the front office once ex-general manager Ken Holland's contract expired. Holland made some controversial moves throughout his career, including collecting veterans like infinity stones. Somehow his teams managed to make it to the Stanley Cup Finals twice at the end of his five-year tenure in Edmonton. They were defeated by a tougher, faster Florida Panthers team both times, and after Holland's contract expired, the team hired GM Stan Bowman . He had been reinstated by the NHL on July 1st, 2024, along with Joel Quenneville, allowing them to pursue opportunities in the league again. The Oilers would hire GM Bowman on July 24th, 2024, and gave him the keys to the kingdom that Wayne Gretzky and Mark Messier once lorded over. Bowman has continued the trend in Edmonton of controversial hirings and signings, with his latest being Mike Babcock as head coach. On the ESPN NHL Opening Night Call, Mark Messier shared his thoughts on the current situation: Anytime you make anybody feel uncomfortable in your life, you should take a look at yourself, and you should say, How could I do that better? I think that's what you do as a person, you try to always be better at what you do, he added. The situation in Columbus has been reviewed, and I'm thankful to the NHL and NHLPA for doing that.Babcock, who last coached an NHL game in 2019, inherits a talented Edmonton team that reached back-to-back Stanley Cup Finals in 2024 and 2025 and is led by captain Connor McDavid. I just don't know if it does go bad and players are having difficulties, who do they turn to? Because if they turn to the leadership, the leadership is management, said Messier. I am just horrified about the whole thing. Whoa. My colleague Mark Messier on the Oilers hiring Mike Babcock as head coach, during the ESPN NHL Opening Night media call today. "I am just horrified about the whole thing, to be honest with you." pic.twitter.com/Wcd7qOsm29 — Greg Wyshynski (@wyshynski) September 23, 2026 From Former Stanley Cup-Winning Coach To Disgrace Babcock has made this any easier on himself, considering how uncomfortable he made players in Columbus by going through their phones and once again putting them in questionable decisions. Behavior was seen in Toronto, which gave Mitch Marner pause , as Babcock put him on the spot regarding the performance of his own teammates. People can learn and grow from their mistakes, but you have to wonder: even with one Stanley Cup championship under his belt, has Babcock truly learned from his past, or is this another signing by Bowman that will be judged harshly in the history books? Babcock has coached 1301 games in the NHL, with a record of 700-418-19, and one Stanley Cup. Is he the right choice to bring another back to Edmonton after their glory years in the mid-80s and early 90s?
2 Veteran Goalies Top List Of Waiver Wire Additions On Wednesday
Everyone applauded the NHL's decision to cut down on the number of preseason games this year. Nobody wants to see players get injured in these exhibition games that don't count. Yet... Injuries have been piling up around the league. Just ask the Buffalo Sabres . Things were looking even more troublesome for the Philadelphia Flyers Tuesday night when starting goalie Dan Vladar was forced to leave the exhibition game in the first period with an undisclosed injury. Fortunately, the news today was that it wasn't serious and the Flyers feel they "dodged a bullet." Nevertheless, any type of goaltender problems at this stage of the year will be taken seriously by their clubs. Teams will certainly be keeping an eye on the waiver wire when necessary. And with that, we have two veteran goalies with a fair amount of NHL experience who were placed on waivers on Wednesday: Pheonix Copley and Jonas Johansson. NEWS: The Lightning have placed G Jonas Johansson on waivers. #TBLightning | #GoBolts pic.twitter.com/PWc07Lye5J — The Bolt Report (@BoltReport_TB) September 23, 2026 Johansson, 31, has been the top backup in Tampa the past three years with the Lightning. He started 23 games last season and posted an .884 save percentage and a 3.29 goals-against average. He has made 105 appearances in the NHL across seven seasons. Johansson bumped out of the backup role in Tampa, placed on waivers However, their acquisition of Dennis Hildeby from the Toronto Maple Leafs in a trade for forward Nick Paul this summer has squeezed Johansson out of the picture. He holds a $1.25 million salary this season (his cap hit drops to $25,000 if assigned to the AHL). Copley, 34, has 78 starts in the NHL over parts of eight seasons, with an .898 Sv%. But he hasn't been a factor the past three years with the LA Kings, appearing in only 10 games total over that time, and just one game in each of the last two seasons, spending most of his time with the Ontario Reign in the AHL. The last time he saw significant action at the top level with the Kings was in 2022-23 when he made 37 appearances, 35 starts, and posted a .903 Sv%. He signed a one-year, 850,000 deal with the Columbus Blue Jackets earlier this summer. But that was before they signed Cam Talbot less than two weeks ago. He will serve as Jet Greaves' backup. As for the Flyers, for now they may be off the hook. But somewhere, with some team, a goalie injury could come along when they least expect it, and perhaps one of these two will get a call.
