Mitch Marner's Agent Blasts Maple Leafs
His first year with the Vegas Golden Knights went pretty well, including an outstanding playoff performance that saw him lead the entire Stanley Cup playoffs with 29 points in 22 games. A performance that should have put to rest the narrative of being a playoff choker. But one year after he left town, Mitch Marner's camp is still coming at the Toronto Maple Leafs organization and its fans. In a newly released interview on the PuckPedia podcast , Marner's agent Darren Ferris blasted the Leafs and their fans for their treatment of his client over the years in Toronto. “He was never protected by his organization.” Darren Ferris on Mitch Marner’s tenure with the Toronto Maple Leafs. Starting all the way with no performance bonuses in his entry-level contract, to how he became the playoff scapegoat. And he was never protected by his organization, in my opinion," Ferris said. "When he first signed his entry-level contract with the Leafs, they did not want him to have performance bonuses in there... "(As the years went on) Misinformation... It just kept spiralling, information that I guess made him the villain in the city... As time went on, he became the focus of everything. Scrutinized for every game, him and his family criticized after every loss, receiving threats on social media... Which was disturbing. "Every year the team came up short, he was the one that was singled out. It's funny because hockey is a team game. You can't pinpoint one person." In his final season in Toronto, he turned down a trade that would have sent him to the Carolina Hurricanes in exchange for Mikko Rantanen. His wife was expecting their first child at the time. Eventually, Marner decided to move on to Vegas in a sign-and-trade, and the tumultuous Mitch Marner era in Toronto was over. But the rehashing of it doesn't seem to be. Toronto media lash out at Marner's agent: 'Stop living in the past!' On the First Up show Thursday morning, the crew insisted that it's time to "Stop living in the past!... All it's gonna do is make people hate you more. Why do you want that?" "Stop living in the past!" @CarloColaiacovo explained why Darren Ferris' comments about Mitch Marner's time in Toronto are unfair and why he feels like #LeafsForever were completely reasonable with Marner.
