Calder Cup Winner Alex Nylander Earns PTO Invite With NHL Team

The Nylander Brothers' dream of playing on the same NHL squad could be coming to an end. At least for now. After a couple of seasons in the Toronto Maple Leafs organization, Alex Nylander will apparently be trying to earn a spot with the Calgary Flames on a professional tryout (PTO) at next month's training camp. Sounds like Alex Nylander will be coming to camp with the #Flames , likely on a PTO. 24G 53P in 65 AHL GP https://t.co/WOLU0PxO7L — PuckPedia (@PuckPedia) August 26, 2026 PuckPedia is reporting the younger Nylander's pending PTO. He had a terrific year with the Toronto Marlies of the AHL, posting 24 goals and 53 points in 65 games, while also adding a sensational penalty shot marker in the Calder Cup Finals. 🚨 THE BREAKAWAY GENES RUN IN THE FAMILY. In all, he's played 126 games in the NHL, recording 25 goals and 49 points. His highlight was a 23-game run with the Columbus Blue Jackets at the end of the 2023-24 season, when he notched 11 goals. He'll be battling for another crack at an NHL job with the Flames at training camp next month.

3 Potential Trade Destinations for Maple Leafs' Philippe Myers

Toronto Maple Leafs general manager John Chayka has made some significant upgrades this summer, which means the internal competition for roster spots heading into training camp is quite fierce. On the back end of the Leafs roster, Philippe Myers has been pushed down the depth chart, and is now on the trade block. Chayka has added Darren Raddysh, Emil Andrae, and the Leafs are welcoming back Chris Tanev with open arms, add in Morgan Rielly avoiding an offseason trade, and the numbers aren't on Myers' side. There's also Leafs' prospect Ben Danford, who the organization loves, and is likely someone who's knocking at the door for NHL minutes as soon as this season. Myers is in a bad spot, and if he's looking for an NHL job, it's not likely coming in Toronto. The 6-foot-6 defenceman has one year left on his contract at $850,000, so it's a very manageable cap hit for just about every team to add in. Myers appeared in 39 games last year for the Leafs, chipping in with two points. In 233 NHL games, he's posted 10 goals and 43 points, and has always left team's wanting more based on his size and skating abilities. Myers could very well be on the move ahead or during training camp next month, and if Chayka does give him a change of scenery he likely desires, expect to see the Philadelphia Flyers, Anaheim Ducks, and Montreal Canadiens having trade interest. Especially the Flyers and Ducks, as both teams' are becoming desperate for NHL defencemen, and while it won't be a mega-deal, Chayka and the Leafs could add a solid depth forward in return to help out their AHL Toronto Marlies. Myers on the move, don't be shocked to see it happening soon.

NHL Trade Rumors: Maple Leafs open to moving 2 players

Toronto Maple Leafs general manager John Chayka is no stranger to making trades, and he's managed to already put his fingerprints all over his roster in his first offseason. Word is, he's far from finished. Trade rumors continue to swirl in Toronto, as Chayka appears open to moving defenceman Philippe Myers and forward Dakota Joshua. Some feel that Myers has asked for a trade as he's quickly fallen down the depth chart and appears destined to spend all of next season with the AHL's Toronto Marlies. With Darren Raddysh on the right side, Emil Andrae able to play either, and prospect Ben Danford showing off all of his toolbox during the Marlies Calder Cup run, Myers is quickly becoming an after thought. The lanky blueliner has one year left on his deal at $850,000. Joshua, on the other hand, will be in a battle to secure a spot in the Maple Leafs bottom six, and with Toronto currently over the salary cap, and some uncertainty around Max Domi's status, Joshua continues to be the one forward who is linked to trade rumors. Joshua's owed $3.2 million AAV this season and next and also holds a 12-team no-trade clause. He had a tough first season in Toronto and despite being a physical force at times, his secondary scoring production was very inconsistent, and he had a hard time carving out a role for himself. With Chayka adding several forwards, specifically depth options, Joshua could be in tough to find regular playing time. Keep an eye on the Leafs, Chayka is going for it these next two seasons as he'll look to try and please Auston Matthews, who is eligible to sign a contract extension next July.
