Blue Jackets trying hard to trade Voronkov
Amid a slow start, Dmitri Voronkov's days in Columbus appear numbered. He was a healthy scratch twice over the weekend, and reports indicate that the Blue Jackets are continuing to actively listen to trade offers for the 26-year-old Russian. He's a pending unrestricted free agent, in the final year of a two-year contract. The Fourth Period reports that GM Don Waddell is looking to use the former 23-goal scorer as trade bait, and is having conversations with a number of clubs. It is unclear which teams have engaged in trade discussions with Waddell about Voronkov’s availability, and while a trade is not imminent, the Blue Jackets are believed to be looking around the league for an upgrade and could package Voronkov in a deal for immediate help. To be sure, this isn't the first that we've heard of Voronkov being on the trade block, and the possibility is becoming more likely as this season progresses. The 6'5" forward had a nice start to his NHL career in Columbus, with an 18-goal season in Year 1, followed up by a 23-goal campaign with a career-high 47 points and a plus/minus rating of +17 in his second season, in 2024-25. But after a hot start last year, his offense dried up and he went through a brutal second-half slump, which led to the beginning of the trade rumors. He totaled just 17 goals and 32 points, while his ice time plummeted by nearly three minutes a game. That disappointing run has continued into this season. He registered just one assist in the Jackets' first five games of the season, and his TOI fell even further, to just 12 minutes a night. "That is what's costing him minutes, and it might eventually cost him, period," says Blue Jackets radio voice Bob McElligott. Voronkov's $4.175 million cap hit could make it difficult to find a taker unless the team retains a significant portion of that. They do have two retention slots remaining, so that's the most likely scenario. Waddell hasn't been shy this season of wheeling dealing, as evidenced by the blockbuster Kirill Marchenko/Matthew Knies trade with the Toronto Maple Leafs on the eve of the regular season.

Maple Leafs call up top goalie prospect Artur Akhtyamov
The Toronto Maple Leafs are calling up some goaltending depth, which will provide veteran Sergei Bobrovsky with a lighter travel schedule. The Maple Leafs announced on Monday, they've called up top goaltending prospect Artur Akhtyamov. The Russian netminder will back up Bobrovsky on Monday, and also backup Anthony Stolarz in Columbus on Tuesday. This allows for Bobrovsky to have a couple of extra days off, while also not having to fly to Columbus to sit on the bench. Akhtyamov is coming off a stellar AHL Calder Cup run last season with the Toronto Marlies, where he posted a 15-7-0 record, along with two shutouts, and a .923 save percentage in the playoffs. He's since signed an extension at $900,000 AAV, which kicks in as a one-way contract next season. It's no surprised that Anthony Stolarz' name has been out in trade talks this past week or so, as general manager John Chayka would move Stolarz in a package for a top-pair defenceman. Along with Akhtyamov, the Maple Leafs also recalled forward Vinni Lettieri. The 31-year-old journeyman is currently third on the Marlies with nine points in five games, including three goals. He hasn't appeared in an NHL game since the 2024-25 season as a member of the Boston Bruins. William Nylander missed Monday's skate with an illness, and is a game-time decision, so this feels like a bit of a security blanket if Nylander can't play on Monday. The Maple Leafs host the San Jose Sharks on Monday night, and are looking to snap a three-game losing streak.
